Fire hose reels:
Today in this blog we shall be discussing about basic introduction
of Fire Hose Reels and its Legal requirements as per National Building Code (NBC).
FIRE HOSE REELS
Fire hose reels are a crucial component of fire safety
equipment in the workplace. They are essentially a type of water supply system
that enables the user to deliver a stream of water to extinguish fires in the
early stages. Fire hose reels consist of a cylindrical drum that holds a length
of fire hose, a nozzle, and a valve. When the valve is opened, water is
supplied to the nozzle, which can be used to direct the flow of water onto a
fire.
In addition to their primary function of extinguishing fires, fire hose reels can also be used for other purposes. For example, they can be used to cool down hot surfaces or to wash away dangerous chemicals or debris in the event of a spill or leak. This versatility makes them a valuable asset in any workplace where there is a risk of fire or other hazardous incidents.
Legal requirements:
The National Building Code of India (NBC) is a
comprehensive set of guidelines that outlines the minimum standards for
building design, construction, and maintenance in the country. It also includes
requirements for fire safety measures, including the installation of fire hose
reel drums in certain types of buildings.
According to the NBC, fire hose reel drums are required
in all buildings that are over 15 meters in height or have a built-up area of
more than 500 square meters. This includes commercial buildings, hospitals,
schools, and residential buildings that fall within these parameters.
The NBC specifies that fire hose reel drums must be
located in a readily accessible and visible location on every floor of the
building. They must be installed in such a way that the hose can cover the
entire floor area of the building, and the hose nozzle must be at a height of
between 900mm to 1200mm above the floor level.
The NBC also lays out specific requirements for the
design and construction of fire hose reel drums. The drum must be made of a
non-corrosive material, such as mild steel or aluminum, and must be capable of
withstanding a pressure of at least 1500 kilopascals (KPa). The drum must also
be able to hold a length of fire hose that is at least 30 meters long and has a
diameter of between 20mm to 25mm.
In addition to the requirements for the fire hose reel
drums themselves, the NBC also specifies the installation and maintenance
requirements for these systems. Fire hose reels must be installed by qualified
professionals who are trained in the installation of fire safety systems. They
must also be regularly inspected, tested, and maintained to ensure that they
are in proper working order.
The NBC also requires that building owners and
operators provide appropriate training to employees and other occupants of the
building on how to use fire hose reel drums effectively in the event of a fire.
This includes instruction on how to operate the hose reel, how to direct the
flow of water, and how to properly maintain the system.
Overall, the requirements for fire hose reel drums as
laid out in the NBC are designed to ensure that buildings are equipped with
effective fire safety measures. By installing and maintaining these systems in
accordance with the NBC guidelines, building owners and operators can help
prevent fires from escalating and causing damage to property and injury
to occupants.
